Learn More About Decomposing

When Elijah asks about how his trash disappears, he is told that it decomposes.

Think about decomposition like the Earth digesting food. It occurs when any living thing dies. They must be broken down to be used for natural resources, like when you eat lunch and get more energy from the food. The Earth also needs energy to continue providing us with a beautiful planet to live on!

Decomposing may sound scary, but it is a natural part of life! Ellie explains decomposing by comparing an apple and a plastic water bottle.

An apple takes only around one month to decompose, while a plastic water bottle will take over 450 years!

Even though you may use a plastic water bottle for only a couple hours, it will stay for hundreds of years.

Think for a second about everything you have thrown away in this past week. That one week of trash will probably be around for hundreds of years!

As nice as it would be for trash to disappear completely, it doesn't!

Here is a chart to learn exactly how long certain items you probably use take to decompose!
